SCHS students benefit from an academically rigorous curriculum designed to prepare them for college and career. Please speak with one of our guidance counselors to develop and maximize your education plan.
Developed by the College Board and a committee of college faculty and AP teachers, the goal of AP courses is to prepare students for the rigors of college. AP courses are for highly motivated students and require a commitment to homework, studying, and producing a work product above and beyond a typical high school course. After each course, students take the AP exam, which may earn college credit, depending upon the score and individual college policy.
Depending on interest, SCHS offers the following AP courses:
Calculus AB and BC
English Language and Composition
Physics
Biology
U.S. History
U.S. Government
Psychology
Career and Technical Education (CTE) program course sequences align with the Nevada Department of Education and were designed to prepare students for careers in high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand fields. CTE courses teach industry-specific knowledge and skills through applied learning methodology and, where appropriate, work-based learning experiences.
We offer nine program course sequences:
Agriculture and Natural Resources
Business and Marketing Education
College Readiness/Career Exploration
Education, Hospitality, and Human Resources
Foods & Nutrition/Culinary Arts
Furniture and Cabinetmaking
Information and Media Technologies
Health Science and Public Safety
Skilled and Technical Sciences
In partnership with Great Basin College, we offer dual enrollment/credit courses. Students enrolling in these courses take a college course and earn credit at GBC and SCHS simultaneously. For more information, please see your counselor and visit the GBC Dual Credit web page.
Elective courses are the perfect way to explore new interests and supplement the educational experience. Students may enroll in several elective courses throughout high school, including:
Aide
Art
Drama
Foreign Language
Journalism/Newspaper
Leadership
Music
Psychology
Public Speaking
Work Privilege
We believe that high-achieving students should be challenged academically. Students who score at or above the 90th percentile on the district’s achievement tests in the year before admission or who are recommended by a teacher or the principal are eligible to enroll in honors courses.
We care about your success and are here to help you plan and achieve your educational goals. Please visit our website for a wealth of information about graduation requirements, college planning, mental health, and more.
