The Building Trades and Welding classes at WWHS have been busy upgrading the school's football field structures. Led by Teacher Spenser Hardman, students have almost finished constructing a new ticket booth from scratch. What’s left of the project is a custom railing and the cement pour for the ADA-compliant ramp, which students hope to finish in the next couple of weeks.
Their next project is renovating the announcer’s booth, originally donated by the filmmakers of "Con Air" in 1997 and still contains some of the original materials from the movie.
“The students are proving that even with limited funds, great things can happen,” Principal Craig Kyllonen said.
That same “can-do” attitude continues. The school recently competed in T-Mobile's Friday Night 5G Lights program, an awareness campaign celebrating the recent addition of 5G coverage in rural America, and a competition for small-town high schools to win a $2 million football field makeover.
While West Wendover was not the grand prize winner, it was a semi-finalist, winning $5,000 to support its football program. The City of West Wendover and local contractors have provided additional support for the revitalization projects, including improved parking. Wells Rural Electric Company has also sponsored a generous $20,000 grant for visitor-side bleachers.
“We're proud to see the community and students working together to bring new life to the field,” said Kyllonen.
