Assistive Technology

What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

The potential of assistive technology for children with disabilities has been recognized by the Federal government in the re-authorization of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) which mandates that assistive technology be considered for each child with a disability. AT services and devices are included with an "assistive technology device" defined as "...any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities." AT can also be useful in providing accommodations to the public or to an employee under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
